Urbahn designed critical upgrades and reorganization of Whitman Hall, complementing the new adjacent performing arts center. The program is phased to maintain occupancy and to align with funding allocations. Due to extensive water infiltration at two exterior ramps, much of the interior had been rendered unusable. The first phase addresses critical performance and code deficiencies, and involves reconstruction and waterproofing of the exterior ramps, and mechanical/lifesafety systems upgrades throughout the basement.
The first phase work gave the College an opportunity to reconsider how the building should be optimized to serve unmet needs. The second phase encompasses a range of programmatic improvements, such as offices for the Brooklyn Center for Performing Arts, facilities for Performance and Interactive Media Arts, Rehearsal Room, Green Room, Costume Shop and Storage, Sheet Music Library, Recording Engineering, Theater Lighting Laboratory, and Dressing Rooms.
