Stony Brook Medical Center Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program

Stony Brook, New York

Urbahn designed the new Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) addition, allowing the Stony Brook University Medical Center to expand emergency psychiatric services to serve over 5,000 patients each year.  Among the goals driving the project were Stony Brook’s need to accommodate current operations while planning for future growth, separate adult and pediatric patients, increase operational flexibility, and reduce patient length of stay.  The new facility provides space for nursing, social work, and medical students to integrate the CPEP into Stony Brook’s educational programs.  Skylights and faceted ceilings in the main adult and child treatment areas foster delight.  The CPEP’s exterior materials and sidewalk canopy marry the addition to the existing hospital, while its faceted stainless-steel rooftop equipment screen punctuates its prominent location.
