Stony Brook Medical Center Ambulatory Surgery Facility

Stony Brook, New York

We designed the new Ambulatory Surgery Center as an autonomous facility, not only physically separate from the main healthcare center, but also unique in character by employing traditional forms and materials to create a contrast with the modernist hospital buildings.  With its broad welcoming canopy, wide circular drop-off, and ample on-grade parking, the new building provides a buffer to the main hospital campus.  The center includes six operating rooms, two procedure rooms, and a 36-bed flexible pre/post-operative unit.  With the exception of Stage 1 recovery bays, all patient areas are private, with space for a family member to remain with the patient.  The building includes an animated pediatric play area and a dedicated pediatric pre/post-operative room.

The project was developed under the Design-Build model to meet an aggressive 18 month schedule from design through construction and commissioning.
