Urbahn designed this new 56-bed inpatient psychiatric facility as part of a unique collaboration between the New York State Office of Mental Health and New York University to advance knowledge in the field of pediatric psychiatry. Our design established a new paradigm for the state where the building’s role as a place of healing is conveyed through a sustainable physical environment that expresses optimism, openness, wellness, and fosters family participation. The heart of the building is The Neighborhood, from which patients access the school, gymnasium, pool, medical and dental clinics, and amenity spaces. Four 14-bed living units with adjoining dining provide the security and sightlines of a modern medical facility in a normative, home-like atmosphere. Landscaped outdoor spaces are treated as essential program elements, with a range of secure healing spaces for distinct age groups and therapeutic functions.
