Tucked within a site below the looming Manhattan Bridge, the original 1960s structure was in need of expansion and renovation to meet the increasingly complex programmatic and systems requirements of the DEP. Primarily a repair and storage garage, the program included a fueling station, shops, equipment storage, administrative offices, and lockers and support space for field personnel.
The massing and bold angling of the roof reflects both the lively surroundings and dynamic program within. The permeable façade features stainless steel mesh screening around the second floor vehicle parking. Designated for LEED certification, Urbahn’s design focuses on sustainability, such as a reuse of existing structure, extensive use of fresh air ventilation, and energy efficient equipment and lighting. Daylighting is maximized through judicious use of curtain wall at the main entrance and polycarbonate glazing at the garage doors.
