Urbahn was responsible for the master planning and design of the 11-acre NJDOT Vehicle Complex. Located adjacent to Newark Liberty Airport, the new complex is sandwiched between Routes 1, 9, and 78. The site required an extensive internal road network and utility infrastructure, and included four buildings – Equipment Repair Garage, Electrical Maintenance, Heavy Repair, and Signs & Lines – as well as a salt storage dome and fueling depot.
To meet an ambitious schedule, and to reflect the humble programs within, Urbahn designed the facilities to be simple, elegant, and easily constructed. The building forms themselves are elemental, with subtle articulation reflecting their functional characteristics. The exterior cladding consists of two tones of off-white concrete block punctuated by white entry and garage doors, and louvers. The hipped green standing seam metal roofs are prominent features within the surrounding bleak urban-industrial landscape.
