Manhattan Family Justice Center

Manhattan, New York

The creation of the Family Justice Center in downtown Manhattan brings under one roof legal and social services to help victims of domestic abuse. Combining the offices of the Manhattan District Attorney with the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence, the center provides a safe place where victims can confidentially speak with prosecutors in a low-stress milieu.

Urbahn designed a welcoming environment, starting with its comfortable waiting area and adjacent glass-enclosed children’s playroom. With the exception of spaces that require complete visual and acoustic privacy, transparency and daylighting are expressed throughout, with full-height glazing at conference and training rooms. In addition to full interior design, the facility required an independent HVAC system and renovations to the historic elevator lobby.
