IS 61Q Addition & Renovation

Corona, Queens, New York

At Intermediate School 61 (Leonardo DaVinci School), Urbahn designed an addition that wraps around the existing building’s north facade.  The addition houses 22 classrooms and a range of program and support spaces.  The library was reconfigured and enclosed by a cantilevered metal panel and glass curtainwall, creating a prominent façade that also shelters the entry plaza below.  A four-story elevator tower located at the easternmost portion of the addition provides full access to the entire school.  The addition interconnects with the existing school at both ends of the corridor on all floors to integrate old and new construction.  Administrative offices located at the intersections of the main corridors allow for interaction of students and staff as well as optimum supervision.

The project was completed on a Design-Build basis, with Urbahn responsible for the programming, design, and preparation of the design criteria documents, as well as review services throughout construction.
