Urbahn designed the Benjamin Banneker Academy to accommodate 560 pre-kindergarten through 5th grade students. Our teamwork with the principal, Board of Education, and community leaders led to a school that reflects the energy, enthusiasm, and commitment of its stakeholders. The planning and design support an ambitious educational program that emphasizes the sciences, technology, and arts within a framework of respect and orderly exploration. In addition, the school features simulated environments to support its Hotel, Tourism, and Restaurant Management program. The building was designed to integrate into the residential community. The building massing and façade design take their cues from the low-scale neighboring houses. Moreover, access to the auditorium and gymnasium was planned permit direct public entry for events during off-hours.
