Marty
Stein has been the heart of Urbahn since 1980 when he became the
President and CEO. Marty leads the firm by example as much as by
direction. The reward in each project is the beauty of solving the
intricate puzzles of space, function, image, material, codes, economy
and time.
Marty received a rigorous architecture
and engineering training, graduating from Pennsylvania State University.
Prior to joining Urbahn in 1963, Marty’s professional career
gained him a solid footing in a variety of building types. Max Urbahn
hired Marty to lead the design of three NASA projects at Cape Canaveral:
the Vehicle Assembly Building, Launch
Control and the Vehicle Orbiter Processing
Facility which ultimately became the hangar for
the space shuttle. In the late 60’s, Marty turned his design talent to
several important healthcare projects, including Lincoln Medical
Center and the Children’s
Psychiatric Center, both in the Bronx.
Becoming Urbahn’s Director of Design in the 70’s, Marty
was responsible for the design of a wide range of large-scale projects,
including FermiLab in Batavia, IL, and the
Federal Home Loan Bank Board Building in
Washington, DC. In the mid-70’s Marty spearheaded
Urbahn’s incursion into strategic planning around the world including
Nigeria, Somalia and Uganda.
Since taking the helm at Urbahn, Marty has cultivated a culture of
service and design innovation. While he continues to personally
design many of the firm’s
major commissions, he has nurtured a team of younger designers who look to Marty
for guidance and mentoring. He promotes a high level of design freedom while
insisting on a client focus in all service areas. Marty has led Urbahn’s
design teams to numerous design awards.
