This project will provide
full accessibility to ten of the eleven stations on the Newark City
Subway System. The tracks were
laid in the 1920’s, in the bed of the 19th century Morris Canal
bed. When the underground portion was constructed, beautiful WPA-era
tile murals were installed which depict the former canal. Work done
under the current accessibility contract is sensitive to the historical
context of the stations, the line and the adjacent communities.
The scope of work includes 15 new hydraulic elevators for station access,
1 new passenger overpass entry ramp,
Raised platforms with tactile warning strips,
Signage/graphics,
Passenger amenities such as telephones, benches and trash receptacles, and
Mechanical equipment rooms.
