As part of the program
to rehabilitate several Rapid Transit Operations (RTO) control centers,
Urbahn planned and designed this crewquarters building. The facility
houses the communications and signal operations that dispatch trains.
The building represents the birth of a new typology for the New York
City Transit System. The building differs greatly from past models because
it incorporates new computer equipment, utilizes new vandal-resistant
materials, and accommodates an evolving dispatcher/crew reporting function.
The design expresses the function, context and impact on the surrounding
community. The building layout is designed to facilitate internal functions
such as site lines to incoming trains and program requirements.
