The Vinalhaven Library was
built in 1907 as part of a program of endowments from Andrew Carnegie
to provide libraries in small towns across the US. It is on the National
Register for Historic Places. Urbahn is designing a new addition and
restoration of the existing library for their centennial celebration.
The program includes three new reading rooms, reconfigured
circulation desk, refurbished finishes, staff areas, handicap
access and new toilets.
The building features copper roofs, clapboard siding and stone terraces.
The original library was constructed of solid load-bearing granite walls;
however the town could not afford to build the addition of granite. It
was therefore designed for post and beam construction, exploiting the
skills of local craftsmen. Urbahn worked with a well-known local stained
glass artist to develop several installations.
