Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory
Batavia, IL

Urbahn was responsible for the design of this 16-story headquarters/laboratory building. The 400 billion electron-volt proton accelerator at the National Accelerator Laboratory is the country's largest and most powerful atom smasher and continues to attract university researchers from around the world. The facility is an A-shaped tower comprised of two separate buildings linked together by a series of internal walkways. Each building rises from a separate 51' x 213' base resting on caissons driven 70 feet into bedrock.

The 420,000 square feet of floor space contains laboratories for high energy experiments, research library, computer center, film processing laboratory, cafeteria, 1,000-seat auditorium, and administrative areas
