PS 69, originally
constructed in 1924 for a population of 800 student had an enrollment
of over 1200 students in grades K through 5 when Urbahn was selected
to design an addition.
By using a compact footprint, stepped silhouette, and
efficient siting for the addition , the property is able to accomodate
a generous school yard, including a sizable . The addition houses
nine kindergartens, Parent’s
Association room and service spaces, and six classrooms, specialized
instruction, and new program and support areas.
The exterior of the addition complements
the original building, with crenellated parapets, belt courses and
watertable in cast stone.
The design was approved by the State Historic Preservation Office
and has won three design awards. |
