Urbahn provided the planning,
design and preparation for Design/Build documents on a new 900-student
school in Canarsie, Brooklyn. This new facility will accommodate pre-k
through 7th grades on a three acre site in a mixed-use neighborhood.
Working closely with District 18,
we developed a “house concept” plan, with the student body
divided into three houses, each with 300 students. The three houses are
located in distinct pods organized around a
central common area which encompasses a “piazza” atrium area,
cafeteria, gymnasium, administration and other central services. Three
lunch rooms all served by one kitchen reinforces the house identity.
The pre-K and Kindergarten rooms are all
located on the first floor to minimize circulation for young children.
