Urbahn designed the 1000-cell
Federal Detention Center at Bush Terminal as part of the multi-phase
project. The new building shares a city block with the 500-bed facility
built during an earlier phase. Due
to the historic nature of the project’s neighborhood, our work
was reviewed and approved by NY SHPO (State Historic Preservation Office).
The space program includes 810 general housing cells,
124 separation cells, and 66 segregation cells. The typical floor contains
three housing units with a central unit manager’s suite. Each
two-level 63-cell housing unit opens onto a large outdoor recreation
deck. The facility has extensive security control systems, full food
and laundry service and complete medical and dental clinics, including
tuberculosis isolation rooms. Also provided are shops, a law library,
social services and visitor areas.
