The Acorn School for Social Justice
Maspeth, NY

Urbahn planned and designed this conversion to guide a developer in a lease-back arrangement with the NYC Board of Education. This adaptive reuse project was unusual in many respects. It involved the gut renovation of an abandoned and deteriorated circa 1900 vaudeville theater in the Bushwick section of Broooklyn. While the historic façade was designed for restoration, the entire interior – including the structural frame, all walls and floors, and the building systems were removed and replaced. The result is a 6-story, 85,000 square foot facility accommodating 600 high school students.

The project involved the creation of six new floors within the existing building shell, carefully aligned to take maximum advantage of the tall existing window openings. To accommodate the program, we designed a rooftop addition.
