To alleviate space shortages
and upgrade mechanical and life safety systems, Urbahn designed
the 60,000 s.f. addition and 112,000 s.f. renovation to this existing
academic science building. The HEB houses a number of teaching programs
for the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, as
well as major research programs financed by government and private
industry sources.
One of the most important
on-going research programs, the Thermal Spray Laboratory,
which occupied half of the basement, had to operate throughout construction.
The laboratories
of the Addition are divided into flexible “generic” labs,
inflexible “hard space” labs, and the 6,000 s.f. Thermal Spray
Laboratory’s high-bay space. Our design also includes a new aluminum
and glass atrium with a broad canopy at its new entrance and
a staff/student lounge.
