The Bronx VA Medical
Center is the result of a two-decade design and construction program
beginning with Urbahn’s master plan for redevelopment. The 19th
century hospital was obsolete, requiring a complete replacement. Our
master plan called for phased implementation of a 702-bed replacement
hospital, a medical research facility and a 120-bed nursing home. The
main hospital building and the research facility were sited to take
advantage of sweeping views of Manhattan, while the nursing home turned
inward to enclose a courtyard with gardens for the residents. Over
the years our relationship has continued on such projects as the relocation
of the psychiatric ward and the gut renovation to create a new outpatient
department.
