Ground is Broken on the Rockland Children's Psychiatric Center.

New York, NY - August, 2006

OhOn August 2nd, ground was broken on the new Rockland Children’s Psychiatric Center (RCPC), a 56-bed treatment facility designed by Urbahn Architects for the Dormitory Authority, State of New York and New York State Office of Mental Health. The $36 million, 104,000 square foot facility is being built on a six-acre site on the Rockland Psychiatric Center campus in Orangeburg, NY, south of the main building.

The new building will serve an adolescent age population from 11 to 17. It will house 56 inpatients and include educational and clinical facilities to support their treatment. The project will include a number of outdoor programmed spaces for recreational and therapeutic functions.

The new RCPC will support the latest approaches in the treatment and care of adolescent psychiatric patients, with an emphasis on interaction with parents and family members. To encourage family participation, an existing chapel building will be incorporated into the facility as the Family Hospitality Center and include two apartments for patients’ families. The design of the facility, as a low-rise cluster of buildings around central neighborhood, will provide a residential-like setting in keeping with the facility’s mission.

The building is being designed as a green building and will meet New York State’s Executive Order 111 for sustainability. By using an integrated approach, the team has targeted 34 potential LEED credits, well above the 26 needed for a LEED Certified building.

"New York State continues to lead the nation in providing cutting edge mental health care to children, adolescents and their families," said OMH Commissioner Sharon E. Carpinello, RN, PhD. "The new Rockland Children's Psychiatric Center building will provide a modern therapeutic environment that will support the provision of high quality, effective clinical treatment, and support the recovery of children and their families. New York State is truly working to achieve the promise for our children and families, and to ensure that families have the tools they need to succeed in helping their children grow into strong and resilient adults."

The building is scheduled to be completed by December, 2008 and ready for patient occupancy in early 2009. When opened, the new Rockland Children’s Psychiatric Center will be operated by New York State Office of Mental Health supported by New York University under an innovative agreement to advance the understanding of children's psychiatry.
